Truvada (emtricitabine, tenofovir) is an antiviral medication used to treat or prevent infection by HIV. It also sees off-label use as a Hepatitis B treatment.

The medication is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), meaning it blocks an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. The two active ingredients in Truvada prevent HIV from multiplying and reduce levels of the virus in the body, denying it a foothold in prevention and slowing the progression of the disease as well as bolstering the immune system in those who are already infected.

Parents can buy Truvada to treat younger patients who weigh at least 37 lbs (17 kg). Dosage of the medication should be calculated by a doctor in patients under 77 lbs (35 kg), according to body weight and other factors.

Truvada will not cure patients who already have HIV/AIDS.

Preventing & Treating HIV

Use in Hepatitis B Virus

This is an off-label use for the medication, which is legal but there's little official information about it. It works similarly in preventing or treating HIV; it reduces levels of the virus in the body, which spares the liver from damage by the virus. It is a long-term treatment and treatment should not stop abruptly; doing so can cause the HBV infection to suddenly worsen.

Again a single tablet is typically taken once per day. Kidney function will need to be routinely evaluated. Duration of treatment can vary to some extent but is typically long-term.

Warnings & Adverse Effects

Truvada is well-tolerated by most patients, with side effects being mild and usually transient:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Stomach pain
• Vomiting
• Dizziness
• Insomnia
• Unusual dreams

More significantly, patients who buy Truvada are at a somewhat elevated risk of:

• Severe liver problems
• Bone problems
• Kidney damage
• Build-up of lactic acid
• Immune system changes

The above conditions are serious, and patients are advised to attend regular doctor checkups so the relevant systems can be evaluated.

Taking medications containing didanosine, cidofovir, albuterol, citalopram, atazanavir, acyclovir, and cholecalciferol can interfere with the effectiveness of one or more the drugs.
